The technique for playing an Echo with a handbell is very simple. Begin by ringing a bell using the standard ring motion, then when the music calls for the Echo, lightly press the lip of the bell into the pad on the table. This produces a 'wa-wa' effect like one would find with a brass instrument being played with a plunger mute. This technique is not and should not be used with the high treble bells because their sound decays so quickly, even a light press into the table pad will cause the bell to dampen too much. However, the echo is most effective with the larger bells. This is because their sound as a very long rate of decay.
